China Targets New Space-Based Computing Network to Process Data Born in Orbit
China’s unveiling of Xingshu, a vast space-based computing network, has generated both excitement and skepticism among scientists. This ambitious project aims to process satellite data in orbit using AI before sending the results back to Earth. At first glance, this might seem like an innovative solution to optimize efficiency – but concerns arise about the feasibility and practicality of such an endeavor.
The scope of Xingshu is hard to ignore. China plans to deploy around 1,000 satellites to create a space-based computing infrastructure that can cater to governments, researchers, and companies across various sectors. Fudan University’s lead developer, Chi Nan, claims that Xingshu will offer “on-demand, time-based computing services” in orbit. Clients can rent computing power by the hour – an innovative model that relies heavily on China’s existing network of satellite constellations, including the Tiansuan constellation led by Beijing University and state-backed Zhejiang Lab’s Three-Body Computing Constellation.
Speaking at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Chi Nan highlighted Xingshu’s potential to revolutionize industries such as energy, shipping, and finance. These sectors stand to benefit from real-time data analysis and predictive maintenance – but so do many others. This raises questions about equity and access: who will be granted access to Xingshu’s computing power, and under what terms?
China’s foray into space-based computing must be viewed in the context of its broader ambitions in space exploration. The country has been rapidly expanding its presence in low-Earth orbit with a string of recent launches aimed at establishing itself as a major player in the global satellite market. Xingshu is merely the latest addition to this arsenal – but one that comes with significant costs and risks.
